Delegates to the Regional Tripartite Conference on Promoting Convention 189 in Cairo from October 22-24, 2012 included government, worker, employer and civil society representatives from Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
The three-day conference promotes decent work for domestic workers in the Arab region, bringing together government, employer and worker representatives, diplomatic missions, civil society groups and international organizations.
Objective:
- Raise awareness on Convention No. 189 and Recommendation No. 201 that guide action to protect domestic workers;
- Support implementation by facilitating the sharing of knowledge and experiences regarding the extension of labour law to domestic workers and its enforcement, as well as the regulation of activities of recruitment agencies;
- Create greater opportunities for women and men to secure decent employment and income;
- Strengthen tripartism and social dialogue on this issue
