During the last two decades, the implementation of youth vocational
training programmes in different countries of Latin America and the
Caribbean turned out to be an alternative, both in institutional and
methodological terms. Simultaneously, an ever-increasing consensus rose
on the need to know precisely the contribution of these programmes and
the relevance of the strategies followed. Starting from a general framework
which takes into account and systematizes the diverse conceptual approaches
on youth unemployment, the author focuses her work on the assessment
experiences of the vocational training programmes implemented successively
in Uruguay -first, Opción Joven; and later, Projoven-. The outcome
is a good description work of the programmes themselves and their assessment
strategies, as well as a set of recommendations for their improvement
and the future design of strategies in this same field.
