This book includes a selection of texts published by the author since
1982 concerning the articulation between training and work in Latin
America. The articles cover a variety of topics which have been ordered
so as to introduce a comprehensive outlook. The book approaches the
subject matter by establishing the historical dilemma between educational
changes and labour transformation upon which the fundamental concepts
of the research are built.
After that, the results of studies focused on substantial aspects are
displayed, especially those regarded as being of key importance throughout
this period: secondary and post-secondary technical education, critical
objective groups for training interventions and finally public policies
concerning vocational training and its relationship with the labour
market. In every case there appears an analysis of the action taken
by the involved social actors as well as the implied challenges for
bringing in equity and productivity to Latin American societies. The
last part includes the latest articles situated on the existing reality
at the turn of the century. These articles focus on the conjunction
between the expansion of educational enrolment and the growing difficulties
of employment in the nineties, and on the role enterprises and the public
sector play in vocational training, their possibilities and contradictions.
In the end, there is a reflexive look upon the steps taken, the applied
methodologies, questions arising throughout the text and future perspectives
for training and research.
This anthology may prove useful to those interested in a key area such
as the link between formal education, vocational training and the labour
world whether as direct actors, as persons in charge of social policies,
or as researchers and evaluators of experiences carried out in this
field.
