Trabalho: Sentido da Vida!
Pedro Demo

This article discusses the importance of work in people’s lives, assuming there is no end to this controversy. Contrary to presumptions, work is not a receding social category. In the framework of a knowledge-intensive society (relative surplus value), beyond the old society in which physical labor prevailed (absolute surplus value), it would seem that people work less, increasingly less. This is true only in a certain sense – for high-level work.
For the vast majority, work is an inescapable desideratum; in such a way that the more time available, the more work is done – and generally only to survive. Work is not the meaning of life, but it is an integral part of it. Hence, it is still key to take into account that a life of alienation, such as Marx would put it, is a life of alienated labor.

Politizando a "Sociedade do Conhecimento" sob a ótica do pensamento de Gramsci
Vânia Cardoso da Motta

This article seeks to introduce the debate on the announced “knowledge society” and to reflect on the origin of its contradictions, taking as theoretical and methodological references the categories of Italian Marxist thinker, Antonio Gramsci.
It is founded on the basic economic, political, and ideological contradictions of the globalized world. It is understood that in the condition of a dependent country, it is fundamental to reflect on the contradictions of this globalized world and their impacts on the historical specificity of Brazilian society in order to find elements for an effective action to overcome those contradictions.

Uma visão histórica sobre alguns temas atuais da Formação Profissional na recomendação 195 da OIT
Marcela Alejandra Pronko

Reading ILO recommendations on vocational training throughout the last century allows us to observe the multiplicity of aspects and relations involved in the treatment of this issue. Some of these aspects and relations acquire relevance due to its currency, and others because of their permanence as vertebral elements in successive conferences. In this article, we propose to examine four important themes in the current debates: meanings of vocational training, introduction of the competence approach, relations between vocational training policies and e mployment policies, and implementing the equal opportunity principle.

It highlights the importance of this research in relation to ongoing changes in the productive scenario and in society at large.

Educação Profissional no contexto da reforma educacional dos anos 90
Carlos Antônio Barbosa Firmino; Ana Maria de Oliveira Cunha

In this work, we investigate vocational training reform in Brazil and its pedagogical framework, competence pedagogy, in order to check whether or not it is implemented in school practice according to what is defended in official documents. We used qualitative research in the form of case studies. Data was collected through interviews with permanent teachers at agrotechnical schools and Cefets (Federal Centers for Technological Education). Results led us to highlight some points, such as: pedagogical practice and its relation to teacher education; teachers’ resistance to changes; and lack of articulation between theory and practice, and school space and time. These points led us to conclude that competence pedagogy is not being implemented in daily school life in accordance with the educational reform’s theoretical references.
