Workshops on the Feminisation of Poverty in Mozambique

  • Maputo, Mozambique       22 February 2001 (Programme)

  • Nampula, Mozambique     26 February 2001

Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world. With a view to informing the formulation of policies, programmes and projects aimed at poverty reduction among women, the UNDP has sponsored a research study on the feminisation of poverty in Mozambique that is being executed by ILO/SAMAT. The objective of the study is to provide an analysis of the current state and causes of poverty among women, their vulnerability to poverty, their coping mechanisms, and the ways in which their poverty may be alleviated. It will complement the existing literature on poverty in Mozambique, which, although not scant, lacks an adequate analysis of the gender dimension. The workshops in Maputo and Nampula will examine various background documents that have been prepared in the course of implementing the project and will seek to draw policy lessons for incorporation in a synthesis report that will be prepared after the workshops.

Training Workshop on Labour Market Information and Analysis

Government agencies and other stakeholders involved in the design and implementation of effective employment and training policies need a solid understanding of the nature of labour markets, and of changes therein. In many countries, however, the necessary labour market information (LMI) is unavailable, unreliable, outdated, misunderstood, badly presented or otherwise inadequate. Reasons are often found in a limited mastering of basic concepts and methods, a lack of analytical skills and inadequate institutional arrangements for the collection, analysis and dissemination of labour market information.

The objective of this training workshop is to enhance the quality and hence the impact of various national employment and training policies through the incorporation of useful LMI in the policy analysis and planning process. Upon completion of their training, the participants will have improved, refreshed or updated their knowledge of basic concepts and acquired a better understanding of the functioning of labour markets and the relevance of adequate information. They will also have gained a better appreciation of what it takes to collect and interpret such information, exposed to ways and means of disseminating labour market information, including via the Internet, and learned about pertinent institutional arrangements, including employment and training observatories. A short study visit will also be arranged.
