Workers’ Activities

Select to magnify the image The major role of trade unions is to defend the rights and promote the interests of working people. This is becoming more complicated, as most employers are having to streamline their workforce in line with technological developments, the mergers of businesses due to globalization and competition, and the privatization of state-owned enterprises.

The primary role of SRO-Harare in the area of workers’ activities in the sub-region has been to strengthen the capacity of national trade union centres, thereby enabling them to offer relevant and efficient services for their members. The Sub-Regional Office provides the required technical assistance in the areas of importance listed below, which were identified through consultation with the national trade union centres:

  • HIV/AIDS at the workplace;
  • ILO Standards and the Declaration on Fundamental Workers’ Rights;
  • Occupational health and safety;
  • Tripartism and social dialogue;
  • Trade unions and globalization;
  • Strategic planning for trade union development;
  • Trade unions and information technology;
  • Organizing skills for trade union leaders;
  • Employment creation (labour-intensive technologies);
  • Collective bargaining;
  • Trade unions and the informal economy;
  • Trade unions and child labour, and
  • Gender and equality issues.
