Workers’ Activities

Workers’ activities provide the link between the ILO and one of its key stakeholders, the trade union movement. The ILO maintains close relations with trade unions and ensures that their concerns are incorporated into the activities of the ILO, thus enabling trade union organisations to make full use of the potential of the ILO.

The focus of workers’ activities in the SRO is to strengthen representative, independent and democratic trade unions in all the countries under the coverage of the SRO.

The key objective is to enable the trade unions to play their role effectively in protecting workers’ rights and interests and in providing effective and relevant services to their members.

To achieve this objective, trade union federations in the sub – region are supported by the ILO in a number of fields such as those listed below:

  • Promoting fundamental rights and principles at work.
  • Organising the unorganised workers
  • Collective bargaining
  • Improving working conditions and the environment.
  • Combating child labour.
  • Fighting unemployment and under employment.
  • Combating HIV and AIDS at the workplace.
  • Research and publications.
  • Promotion of the ratification and implementation of ILO standards.
  • Mainstreaming gender and equality issues in the work of trade unions.
  • Tripartism and social dialogue.

The SRO workers’ activities are carried out through mainly the provision of workers’ education activities, advisory services and the dissemination of information from ILO publications of relevance to workers and their organisations.
