DWCPs in Africa are developed and implemented as integral parts of global, regional and national development frameworks. This includes the MDGs, the ILO 2008 Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization, AU Plan of Action on Employment and Poverty Alleviation, the ILO Decent Work Agenda for Africa and PRSP.

The ILO Regional Office for Africa is located in Addis Ababa, home to the African Union (AU) and the UN Economic Commision for Africa (ECA). The Regional Office is responisble for planning and coordinating the work of ILO's network of 13 offices throughout Africa. At the regional level it works closely with the AU and ECA, and through them with the Regional Economic Communities, to promote decent work in Africa.

98th Session : Heads of State, government and leaders from the world of work tackle the global jobs crisis
Some 4,000 representatives of government and employers’ and workers’ organizations met here on 3-19 June to search for an effective response to the growing impact of the economic and financial crisis on employment, social protection and the world of work.
The annual Conference of the International Labour Organization has been called on to discuss ways and means to protect workers, families and enterprises from the effects of the crisis and to promote rapid economic and employment recovery.
The International Labour Conference featured on 15-17 June an ILO Summit on the Global Jobs Crisis. This Summit addressed by some ten Heads of State and Government, a panel of Vice-Presidents, and Labour Ministers and employers’ and trade unions’ leaders from the 183 ILO member States.

“Let’s Combat Trafficking in Human Beings Especially Women and Children: 2009-2012.”
On June 16th, the day of the African child (DAC), the African Union Commission (AUC) launched the Initiative against Trafficking in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), International Labour Organization (ILO), and UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), EU Delegation to African Union, and US Delegation to the African Union.
The launch contributed in sending a strong signal on the need to protect children and ensure their survival. This initiative also falls within the framework of the Plan of Action on Africa Fit for Children and the Call for Accelerated Action on the implementation of the Plan of Action towards Africa Fit for Children. The launching of the AU.COMMIT Campaign on this day therefore reinforced the celebration of the DAC and focused on the elimination of trafficking in human beings especially women and children.

World Day against Child Labour and the tenth anniversary of Convention No. 182
The 2009 World Day against Child Labour was marked around the world on or around 12 June, Friday. The theme for this year is “Give girls a chance: End Child Labour“.
This year in Ethiopia, the Wold Day against Child Labour was colourfully celebrated with different activities with the active participation of representatives of Government and Social Partners as well as NGOs, UN Agencies, and children from rehabilitation centres and several high schools. The day was marked by a Street Rally accompanied by Boys and Girls Scouts and the Federal Police March Band.
In Geneva, a special sitting of the 98th Session of the International Labour Conference was held on Friday, 12 June at 3 p.m. in the Assembly Hall, at the Palais des Nations. Between 2 p.m. and 2.45 p.m. at the Place des Nations, school children from local schools participated in a solidarity event, along with civic leaders from the City and the Canton of Geneva, and other invited guests and ILO officials.

Zambian labour reporter, Jessie Ngoma Simengwa, won the second ITC-ILO Prize "Media for Labour Rights" for her article entitled "Plight of the Zambian mine accident victim"
The award ceremony took place at the ILO headquarters in Geneva, during the 98th Session of the International Labour Conference (3-19 June 2009).
Ms Jessie Ngoma Simengwa, attended one of the training courses for media professionals organized by the International Training Centre of the ILO, benefiting from a fellowship awarded to the Zambia Congress of Trade Union.
