DECENT WORK AND PROTECTION FOR ALL IN AFRICA

The ILO's priorities have been determined on the basis of country objectives and are also in line with the conclusions and recommendations of various international, regional and subregional meetings. There are as follows :

Promotion of fundamental principles and rights at work
- assistance in ratification and application of fundamental conventions and their application
- strengthening of labour institutions
- progressive elimination of child labour

Promoting employment and combatting poverty through
- integration of employment policies and programmes into economic reforms
- strengthen national information systems
- enterprise development
- adapting training to labour market requirements
- assistance to countries emerging from conflicts

Enhance social protection through
- working conditions and occupational safety and health
- reform and extension of social security systems

Enhance social dialogue through
- assistance to the restructuring and strengthening of employer's organizations
- enhance worker's organizations
- reform and / or establishment of tripartite institutions

 
This programme was adopted by the ILO African member countries during the IXth meeting held in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire), December 1999
