Ongoing project
Building on their collaboration, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the ILO launch their joint project aiming at preventing HIV/AIDS and mitigating its impact in the world of work.
The project covers the period 2006-2009, and countries involved are Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Togo and Zimbabwe.
The rationale behind the project strategy takes into account the linkages between vulnerability reduction, risk reduction and impact reduction.
The project is based on three operational levels:

| | 1) | at national/ sectoral level - mobilizing and supporting ILO constituents and other stakeholders, by strengthening their capacity to respond to HIV/AIDS, reforming the legal/ policy framework and coordinating responses;
| | 2) | at workplace level - assisting workers and employers to develop and manage the response in enterprises within identified high-risk sectors, and using cooperatives and small business development structures as mechanisms for impact mitigation;
| | 3) | at individual/ worker level - this will result in an improved knowledge and awareness among workers, enhancing compliance with labour/OSH laws and policies, and ensuring improved working and social conditions for women and men. Integral to the programme is recognition that HIV/AIDS prevention can be achieved by preventing other psychosocial issues at the workplace. This integrated action (associated with vulnerability reduction) will lead to reduced risk behaviour and to a strengthened legal framework protecting workers' rights.

Completed projects
| • | HIV prevention in the informal sector in four Southern African countries (2002-2003)
This pilot project on HIV prevention in the informal economy seeked to assess the vulnerability and risks that informal workers face regarding HIV infection and the impact of AIDS on business and work.
An important aspect of the project was to provide information and education on HIV/AIDS, and to adapt the Code of Practice to the needs of informal workers. The countries involved were Ghana, South Africa,
Tanzania and Uganda.
| | • | Labour market and employment implications of HIV/AIDS (2002-2003)
The project aimed to increase the understanding of the labour and employment implications of HIV/AIDS and the consequences for policy formulation at enterprise and macroeconomic levels.
The target countries were Botswana, Ethiopia, Malawi, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia.
