News from around the world on HIV/AIDS and the world of work, minute by minute

International AIDS Conference (IAC), México City, México , 3-8 August 2006

This Conference takes place every two years, bringing together the scientific community, activists, international organizations, donors, pharmaceutical companies and others with a stake and interest in HIV/AIDS.

We wish to encourage and support representatives of our constituents and other stakeholders to participate in the Conference. In particular, we encourage you to submit abstracts - only one page long (300 words) - which share practical experience from the workplace.
We have therefore prepared the guidance note below on applying for scholarships and proposing abstracts - please note that the deadline for abstract submission is 19 February and for scholarship application is 26 February. You can also consult the Conference website directly: www.aids2008.org

International and media scholarships

There are two types of scholarships:
- International scholarships - offered to a number of people from developing countries, community groups, marginalized communities, people living with HIV and AIDS, youth and students to help them attend the conference.
- Media scholarships - available for HIV and AIDS related media representatives from around the world.

Applicants can request a full or partial scholarship.
A full scholarship includes:
- registration to the conference;
- economy-class return airfare;
- shared accommodation in a budget hotel;
- modest daily allowance.

A partial scholarship includes any combination of the above.

Applying for a Scholarship

Those interested in applying must fill in and submit the international scholarship application form, which is available at www.aids2008.org or from:
AIDS 2008 International Scholarship Department
E-mail: internationalscholarship@aids2008.org

The deadline for applying for a scholarship is 26 February 2006.

Proposals for abstracts

Abstracts are summaries of completed or ongoing work which you want to share with others at the Conference - "essential information about studies and observations, policies, programmes and interventions... - these may include community-based activities as well as work in the area of HIV prevention, care.., human rights.. and policy development." If an abstract is selected, it will be developed and presented more fully either in a session (oral presentation) or as a poster - see below for more details.

The Conference has five tracks, each one covering a number of sub-themes. Tracks B to E all have sub-themes relevant to the work of the ILO and its partners:
A. Biology and pathogenesis of HIV
B. Clinical research, treatment and care
C. Epidemiology, prevention and prevention research
D. Social, behavioural and economic science
E. Policy and political science.

Cross-cutting themes will also help structure the whole program of the conference and will serve as a basis for interdisciplinary sessions conveying presentations from various tracks and disciplines on relevant issues. In addition to choosing the track category, you may then also indicate a cross-cutting theme that is relevant to your abstract:
- Globalization and HIV/AIDS
- Science and technology
- Health Systems Strengthening and Integration
- Stigma, Discrimination and Social Justice
- "Do the Right Thing" and Evidence-informed policies and Programmes
- Tracking Progress and Accountability

It's important to remember that the use of words like 'science', 'research', and 'studies' doesn't mean that the Conference is only interested in medical and academic papers - on the contrary, there is increasing demand for reports of practical activities and creative ideas that focus on what actually works. Many workplace partners have stories to tell that are relevant and useful, even inspirational, that should be shared as widely as possible.

Successful abstracts will be accepted as one of the following:

- Oral presentation: ten minutes presentation followed by a short discussion.

- Poster presentation: a small number of the posters to be presented orally during the poster viewing sessions. Presentation lasts five minutes followed by questions and discussion.

- Poster exhibition: If selected, a day will be given for the presentation (10:30-18:00). A presenter will be required at the poster between 12:30-14:00 to answer questions and to provide information.

Conditions for abstract proposals:

1. Abstracts can only be submitted in English and online
2. The text should not exceed 300 words
3. They must not have been published or submitted for presentation to any other national or international meeting
4. You should say which Track your abstract fits into (The list of sub-themes is available on the Conference website: www.aids2006.org. You don't have to link your abstract to a particular sub-theme just the Track as a whole).
5. There is no charge for submission, but each person is limited to two submissions. There may be more than one author, but you should make it clear who is submitting the abstract.
6. Format: the XVII International AIDS Conference offers two options:

Option 1
Abstracts presented under the first option should contain concise statements of:
Background: the study objectives, the hypothesis to be tested, or a description of the problem;
Methods: method(s) used or approach taken;
Results: specific results in summarized form (with statistical analysis when appropriate);
Conclusions: description of the main outcome of the study.

Option 2
Abstracts presented under the second option should contain concise statements of:
Issues: a summary of the issue(s) addresses by the abstract;
Description: a description of the research, project, experience, service and/or advocacy;
Lessons learned: conclusions and implications of the research or project;
Next steps: possible next steps for implementation or further research.

Gender Analysis in Abstracts
Inclusion of gender breakdown of data is strongly encouraged, and should be provided as well as a comprehensive gender analysis in the results section whenever possible. If applicable, your abstract should include the number and percentage of men, women and transgender who participated in your research or project, and disaggregation of results by gender. If your research or project was specific to one gender, please state.

Last date for submission is 19 February 2006.

You'll receive email confirmation of receipt and a personal password to access, modify (up to the deadline, 22 February 2006) and view the status of the abstract.

Important note:

If you're applying for a scholarship you should submit your abstract(s) first. You'll get a reference number which you must include on your scholarship form.

Also note that the XVII International AIDS Conference will offer prizes and awards on the basis of abstracts:
