Senegal - Support to organizations workers and organizations of employers for the setting up of health insurance systems

STEP in Senegal supports complementary healthcare mutual organizations of government officials. Either directly, as it is the case for the mutual organization of UDEN teachers and for healthcare mutual organizations of government officials; or indirectly, through the Union of Healthcare Mutual Organizations of Dakar (UMSD). These mutual organizations will be trained with MAS software and will contribute gradually to constitute a national database.

Reinforcement of supporting structures: Medicos del Mundo and APROFES

STEP in Senegal supports structures that set up healthcare mutual organizations within their intervention zones, in particular the international association Medicos del Mundo and the Senegalese NGO APROFRES.

The project Medicos del Mundo is included in the action strategy of the Ministry of Health of Senegal and aims to improve and increase the supply of services in sexual and reproductive health in vulnerable zones. One of the priorities of the project is to improve the financial accessibility to health care. Strategies used by Medicos del Mundo go through the setting up of healthcare micro-insurance schemes in the health district of Vélingara (Kolda).

The Association for the Promotion of Women in Senegal was created in 1987 by a group of young women convinced that the failure of development strategies is caused mostly by the lack of compromise to the demands of social, economic and cultural promotion of women. APROFES aims to improve social-economic conditions of women from the regions of Kaolack, Fatick and Diourbel, in particular through the development of revenue generating activities and by setting up healthcare micro-insurance structures.
