The Global Social Trust (GST) pilot project
The right to social security as well as the right to health are fundamental human rights. In the developing world these rights often do not exist due to a lack of structures and lack of means to access when they do exist. This grim situation can be remedied. With a modest contribution of a few Euros, we can save the lives of populations which are vulnerable.
With the help of the Global Social Trust (GST), an innovative financing mechanism based on international solidarity, one can directly and concretely support millions of families who do not benefit from health care, who lack the means of subsistence, who lack a future. The idea is to collect funds in the countries of the Northern hemisphere in order to develop social security coverage for people in the Southern hemisphere. It is a link of solidarity between two peoples.
The Confédération Syndicale Indépendante du Luxembourg OGB-L through its NGO Solidarité Syndicale, the Ministry of Health in Ghana and the International Labour Office have entered into an agreement to implement the Global Social Trust (GST) pilot project in Ghana.
The Global Social Trust pilot project in Ghana will provide a cash benefit of approximately US$ 10 per month (Euros 7.50 per month) to Ghanaian indigent pregnant women and mothers with children under the age of five who meet conditions of pre-natal, post-natal and regular health check-ups. The aim is to make a real contribution towards the reduction of maternal and infant mortality and the reduction of poverty. A step towards achieving the goals set by the Millennium Development Goals of eradication of poverty (MDG 1), the reduction of child mortality (MDG 4) and the improvement of maternal health (MDG 5).
Workers of Luxembourg will be requested to support this project through their regular voluntary contributions of Euros 5 per month.
