The role of Social Security in the Decent Work agenda

Social Protection is one of the four strategic objectives of the Decent Work agenda which define the core work of the ILO. The importance of effective social security mechanisms and the ILO's advocacy role in this field through continued assistance of the ILO to government agencies and social security institutions has been stressed by the Director-General as a major contribution of the ILO. The International Labour Conference in its 89th session (June 2001) reaffirmed in its conclusions (pdf 502 KB) the importance of social security and called on the ILO to renew its commitment to the improvement and the extension of social security coverage. The Social Security Department is the ILO's operational unit which permits it to achieve its mandate laid down in its 2006-2007 Programme and Budget under the Strategic Objective of Social Protection for All.
