Partnerships

Due to the long-standing and internationally recognized expertise of the Social Security Department in its field, the Department has over time developed with other specialized international agencies partnerships to enhance synergies and complementarity. These partnerships are built on a common vision and objective - working together towards attaining "Social Security Coverage for All".

  • The Global Alliance - created in 2005, it brings together the largest organizations and networks active in the extension of social protection: ILO, ISSA AIM, ACI, ICMIF, IHCO and WIEGO;
  • The ILO/WHO/GTZ Consortium - established in 2004, it covers global, regional and local co-operation in the broad area of health protection and social health insurance. Activities range from specific country targeted technical cooperation projects to joint research projects on topical issues;
  • The Concertation - created in 1999, it gathers more than 150 organizations coming from formal and informal settings closely linked to the African mutual benefit movement. It is supported by international partners: ILO/STEP, USAID/PHR+, GTZ, AIM, ANMC, WSM, RAMUS, UNMS, MFP and AWARE.
  • The Asian Micro-Insurance Network (AMIN) created in 2003, it covers 8 countries and gathers 22 among the largest civil society organizations running micro-insurance schemes in the region;

Joint partnerships have been developed with various international organizations, amongst these:

  • with the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID). Collaboration with the Social Protection Team (Policy Division) has been focused on ILO expertise in the area of costing of basic universal benefits for low-income countries and the impact of these on the reduction of poverty. This successful joint collaboration contributes to bring to the forefront the essential role of social protection as one of the key solutions to the priorities identified by the global political agenda items in-line with the UN MDG and other international initiatives (such as the Commission for Africa set up by Prime Minister Tony Blair) focussing on poverty reduction;
  • with ILO/PAHO. The two Organizations launched a joint regional initiative (2004-2008) to support Member States' efforts to extend Social Protection in Health (SPH) to excluded groups. The two Organizations have made a commitment to execute projects and programs that promote and establish the systematic analysis and diagnosis of exclusion in health, the identification of solutions, and technical support to countries for the implementation of actions to tackle the problem;
  • with the Council of Europe. Over the years, the ILO through its International Labour Standards Department and the Social Security Department has assisted the Council of Europe with the drafting of the European Code of Social Security and the various other instruments and has been assisting member states in order to ascertain compliance by member States with the requirements of the European Code of Social Security and its Protocol.
