  • 28th of April Activities
    Organized by: UNITE THE UNION
    UNITE THE UNION, the largest trade union in the UK, is promoting the 28th of April activities through its website, its staff and its workplace representatives. In its publications, UNITE reminds its members that one of the continuing themes of the 28th of April is Prevention and Accountability, under which UNITE has been campaigning for corporate manslaughter legislation. The British Parliament passed such a law in 2007, and it will come into effect on the 6th April 2008. Above all, UNITE THE UNION is urging members to organise for the 28th of April; to either sponsor an event or attend one hosted by other trade unions in the TUC. In addition, it has made available a good number of attractive posters and materials to promote the Day. Several events are planned in London, Manchester, Liverpool, West Midlands, Wales, and Scotland.
  • Workers Memorial Day Celebration
    Organized by: UNITE the Union, Thomposons Solicitors, Southern and Eastern Trades Union Council (SERTUC)
    SERTUC and Thompsons Solicitors present Workers Memorial Day on Monday the 28th of April (6 p.m. - 8 p.m.) at the Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS. The event will feature Paul Mason speaking about his acclaimed new book 'Live Working or Die Fighting', Tom Jones, Thompsons Solicitors, a short film: "Mesothelioma: the human face of an asbestos epidemic", and a food and wine buffet. The event will be free admission.
  • Workers Memorial Day Service
    Organized by: Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK), UNITE THE UNION
    A Workers Memorial Day Service will take place at 6pm on the 20th of April at Trinity Methodist Church, Paul Hill, Newlyn. Helen Le Bretton's husband, Denis Le Bretton, was only 57 when he was killed in a workplace incident in 2001. Since then, Helen has campaigned for major changes in health and safety law and stricter enforcement against employers' negligence. As a member of Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK), Helen has been working to gain recognition in Cornwall for International Workers Memorial Day. This year she has organised a special service on Sunday, the 20th of April to commemorate those who have been killed at work. The Reverend Julian Drew will conduct the service at Trinity Methodist Church in Newlyn, and the Mayor will attend. Helen invites to the service all who are interested in workplace safety and especially those who have lost someone they care about in a workplace death.

    Organized by: UNITE THE UNION
    A service will take place at the Unite Workers Memorial Tree in Astley Park, Chorley on Friday, the 25th of April. The service will commence at 6:00 p.m. Those interested in attending should meet at the Park gate (Park Road) at 5:50 pm. All are welcome.
  • Rally and Refreshments
    Organized by: UNITE THE UNION
    A rally will take place at Peace Gardens in Manchester (behind Manchester Town Hall) beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, the 28th of April. Refreshments will be served at the Mechanics Institute afterwards.
  • World Day Event
    Organized by: Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK), UNITE THE UNION
    An event is being organised on the South Piazza of Georges Dock Building (corner of Mann Island and the Strand), Pier Head, Liverpool L3 1DD at 12 noon. Speakers will include representatives from the Trade Unions, local solicitors and Linzi Herbertson from Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK).
  • West Midlands World Day Activities
    Organized by: Wolverhampton, Bilston & District Trades Union Council, UNITE THE UNION
    Wolverhampton, Bilston & District Trades Union Council and the Black Country Urban Industrial Mission will mark Wolverhampton's 17th annual International Workers' Memorial Day on Monday the 28th of April at 12:30 p.m. at the Workers' Memorial Day Tree, next to the Cenotaph, St.Peter's Square outside Civic Centre/St Peter’s church. There will be trade union speakers, local MPs, and a wreath laying ceremony. Industrial Chaplain the Rev.Benson Headley will speak. Lastly, Civic flags will fly at half mast.
  • Telephone Support Line
    Organized by: Hazards Campaign Wales, UNITE THE UNION
    On the 28th of April, the Hazards Campaign Wales will launch a telephone support line for families who have been bereaved by a workplace fatality and for co-workers, who have experienced a work-related death.
  • Commemoration Ceremony
    Organized by: Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), UNITE THE UNION
    In Clydebank on Saturday, the 26th of April at 12 noon, there will be a commemoration ceremony at Clydebank Plaza. Speakers include will include Ian Tasker, the STUC Assistant Secretary.
  • Memorial Day Lecture and Service
    Organized by: Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC), UNITE THE UNION
    In Dundee, Scotland on Friday, the 25th of April at 12:30 p.m. at City Chambers there will be the Annual Memorial Day lecture on the theme 'Equality for all, Creating an Inclusive Scotland' by Mary Senior, STUC Assistant Secretary. On Monday, the 28th of April, there will be a service at the memorial tree adjacent to Discovery Quay
  • Memorial Ceremony
    Organized by: Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK), International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal, Protect in Harmony, UNITE THE UNION
    In Edinburgh, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April at 12 noon, there will be a ceremony at Memorial Tree in Princes Street Gardens. Speakers will include Louise Adamson, from Families Against Corporate Killings (FACK), and Eurig Scandrett, from the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal. Music will be from Protest in Harmony, Edinburgh's radical singing group.
  • Memorial Service and Seminar

    In Fife, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April at 11:00 a.m., there will be a memorial service in Beveridge Park, Kirckaldy. On Monday, the 28th of April, at 12 noon until 2:00 p.m. there will be a seminar on Corporate Manslaughter Bill and Health and Safety in Fife Council. Speakers will include Thompsons' Solicitors, Andy Stark, TUC Studies Tutor, Caroline Herschel, Corporate Services, Fife Unison.

    On Monday, the 28th of April at 1:00 p.m. there will a commemoration in George Square. Speakers will include Karen Thompson (Families Against Corporate Killings), Cllr Stephen Purcelk (Leader, Glasgow City Council), Dave Moxham (STUC Deputy General Secretary), Sarah Jones (Scottish Government and PCS member), and Frank Maguire (Thompsons' Solicitors).

    In Greenock, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April at 11:00 a.m. there will be a commemoration at Workers Statue in Clyde Square.
  • Unveiling

    In North Lanarkshire, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April at 12 noon, there will be an unveiling of the North Lanarkshire Workers Memorial in Summerlee Heritage Park, Coatbridge. Speakers will include: Elaine Smith (MSP) and Grahame Smith (STUC General Secretary).

    In Midlothian, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April at 12:30 p.m. there will be a commemoration at the Memorial in George V Park, Bonnyrigg, Midlothian.
  • Seminar and Commemoration
    Organized by: Scottish Trades Union Congress (STUC) and UNITE THE UNION
    In West Lothian, Scotland on Monday, the 28th of April, (9:30 a.m. for 10:00 a.m. start), there will be a Health and Safety Seminar at Bathgate Sports Centre. At 12:00 noon there will be a commemoration at the Workers Memorial. Speakers will include the current STUC Vice President, Fiona Farmer.
  • Seminar and Commemoration

    The Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on UK employers to give better occupational health assistance to the two million employees who become ill each year because of their jobs. The TUC is publishing a new guide to occupational safety and health for union safety reps. Its publication will coincide with Workers' Memorial Day and will be entitled, "Occupational Health: Dealing with Issues." Representatives will be able to use the guide in order to assess the extent of ill-health in their workplaces. Representatives will also be able to work with their employers to find the best ways to make business a better place to work.
