Occupational safety and health

Preventative Health and Safety Culture Worldwide

Throughout the world, there is growing acceptance that accidents and ill-health at work do not only have an impact on the lives of individual workers, their families and their potential for future work, but also on the productivity and profitability of their enterprises and ultimately on the welfare of the society in which they live. In short, safety and health at work makes good business sense, and maintaining acceptable standards is seen as an integral and key component of societal development, poverty alleviation and of 'decent work'.

This impetus has been maintained, and recent years have seen both the adoption of a Global Strategy for OSH, which seeks to integrate and enhance the ILO's activities in this area, and the development of a new Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health adopted as a Convention at the 95th Session of the International Labour Conference 2006.
