The 2007 IALI Conference, From Compliance to High Performance, “promises to be IALI’s most successful conference ever, with a number of ‘firsts’,” boasts Ontario Minister of Labor Deputy Assistant Minister Helle Tosine. Among some of the firsts are that the conference will be held in North America, as well as the fact that there will be work site tours to see occupational health and safety practices in action.
Canada has sponsored participants from over 30 countries; particularly those in the South and Central Americas as well as in the Caribbean in order to have representatives from various countries tackle the issues of different occupational safety and health challenges they face.
There are four big themes of the conference; Innovative Approaches: From Enforcement to High Performance and Regional Cooperation, Targeted Inspection and Enforcement, Modernizing the Labor Inspectorate, and Measuring the Impact of Labor Inspection Activities. Each of these themes highlight major issues that IALI members have had to encounter all over the world.
The conference has several respected keynote speakers that will address the audience over the days of the conference including Michele Patterson, the President of IALI, Mr. Gerd Albracht, Senior Specialist in Occupational Health and Safety and Development Coordinator of Inspections Systems at the ILO, Malcolm Sparrow, author of “Strategic Management of Regulatory Agencies” and Helle Tosine, Assistant Deputy Minister of the Ontario Ministry of Labor.
One day before the conference begins will be the 2007 ILO Better Health and Safety for Suppliers Workshop. Using the supply chain to promote higher standards of safety and health at work can be immensely effective. Building on recent practical experience, this workshop provides an opportunity for large and small enterprises, government representatives, employers, workers and others to discuss the challenges of using the supply chain in this way and to agree a way forward. As part of the workshop, 3 working groups will also consider particular case studies on how multi-national enterprises and other large organizations can influence their suppliers' safety and health performance, the accreditation of suppliers and how their performance can be measured in practice.
