The National Project Steering Committee

The National Project Steering Committee is the national body that approves the project workplan and provides direction to the project activities. It is composed of government, employers' and workers' representatives. The project partners ILO, VW and GTZ are also part of the PSC.

The National Project Steering Committee in South Africa was constituted in November 2005. The process optimizations took place in July 2005, including the provision of recommendations for improvement of OSH and economic performance at enterprise level. Follow up of the POT recommendation took place in November 2005. Labour inspection training has been carried out carried out. The international consultant Ms. Lehmann carried out inventories in South Africa in February 2006 on how to implement a prevention service system. The Recommendations developed with a working group were presented and approved by the PSC. The Department of Labour suggested integrating the Prevention Service System into the DOL infrastructure.

Process Optimization Consultancies

A process optimization team composed of labour inspectors and other occupational health and safety experts from a multi-national enterprise inspect the suppliers' facilities and consult with enterprise workers' representatives on how to improve the workplace. Implementation of the recommendations given during the enterprise visit, show that both productivity and occupational health and safety performance can be increased with rather small efforts if competent advice was provided.
