Implementing social standards

Select to magnify the image

The ILO's Governing Body has identified eight conventions as "fundamental", covering subjects that are considered as fundamental principles and rights at work: freedom of association and the effective recognition of the right to collective Bargaining; the elimination of all forms of forced or compulsory labour; the effective abolition of child labour; and the elimination of discrimination in respect of employment and occupation.

Social Standards do not only refer to these principles covered in the ILO's Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work (1998) but also to the right of employees to safety and health at the workplace. Volkswagen has been the first company in the automotive sector that with its 2002 Social Charta has established a declaration on social rights and industrial relations. GTZ underlines the importance of implementing Social and Ecological Standards in order to foster sustainable development.
