2009

  • Safety & Health Training and Distance Learning - Presentation by Don Brown

    4 March, Geneva, Switzerland

    On March 4th, Don Brown, CEO of the company Digital-2000 Productions, based in Stafford, Texas, and his staff made a presentation at ILO Headquarters on "Safety and Health Training Videos: 21st Century Distance Learning". Mr Brown also made a presentation on a web-based interactive safety and health training programme developed by his company.
    The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session.
    Digital-2000 has in the past kindly donated costs of labour and time to work supporting the 5th edition of the Encyclopaedia.

  • Nanotechnology: The Newest Slice of Global Economic Daily Life - Presentation by Dr John Howard

    27 November, Geneva, Switzerland

    Dr John Howard, former Director of the US National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and now chair of the Steering Committee of the 5th edition of the ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety made a presentation on the latest findings in the safety and health aspects of nanotechnology, the emerging field of technology dealing with particles and structures below 100nm (i.e. below one ten-millionth of a metre) in size.
    Dr Howard discussed both the industrial applications of nanotechnology and the societal implications of this new technology from an occupational perspective. He gave some indications as to how the health of nanotechnology workers can be protected and provided an overview of the development of national and international standards in the area of nanotechnology.

  • Installation of Steering Committee Chair

    11 July, Geneva, Switzerland

    The International Labour Organization's (ILO) SafeWork Programme welcomed the acceptance by Dr John Howard, Director Emeritus of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to serve as chair of the Steering Committee for the 5th edition of the ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health and Safety. "SafeWork and the Encyclopaedia will benefit from the contributions of one of the most sophisticated, multi-disciplinary minds of our time", said SafeWork Director Dr. Sameera Al-Tuwaijri. "He is a world leader in occupational health policy and programme development".
    Dr. Al-Tuwaijri said Dr Howard's longstanding experience in leading a national approach to occupational safety and health will help the ILO "apply the lessons learned from his nation to many of our ILO country programmes, thus improving the lives of our constituents throughout the world".
    Dr. Howard noted, "I welcome the challenge of bringing the best knowledge and practices in the world to everyone in an unprecedented format on the web".

  • Memorandum of Understanding between NIOSH and the ILO

    23 April, Washington DC

    ILO-NIOSH agreement Washington (ILO News) - The Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment (SafeWork) of the International Labour Office (ILO) and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) today signed an agreement aimed at expanding safety and health in the workplace.
    Under the agreement, NIOSH will support the ILO Encyclopedia of Occupational Safety and Health, including the identification of experts, writing, editing, reviewing and updating articles, and suggesting new topics and approaches to information and dissemination. The agreement foresees closer cooperation between the ILO SafeWork programme and NIOSH, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the area of occupational safety and health (OSH). The agreement was signed by Dr. Sameera Al-Tuwaijri, Director of the ILO SafeWork programme and Dr. John Howard, Director of NIOSH.
    "NIOSH is pleased to reaffirm our close working relationship with the International Labour Office by signing today's agreement", said NIOSH Director John Howard, M.D. "In today's global marketplace, partnerships such as this are key for safer and healthier workplaces here in the U.S. and around the world."
