The principles set out in the Code of practice have also been promoted through a series of International Private Sector Conferences on Drugs in the Workplace and the Community, organized jointly by the United Nations International Drug Control Programme (UNDCP), the ILO and local partners.
The first International Private Sector Conference on Drugs in the Workplace and the Community was held in Seville, Spain in 1993. It was followed by a second conference in Brazil covering Latin America, and a third in Malaysia covering Asia and the Pacific.
In 1999 over 200 representatives of employers' and workers' organizations, public authorities and NGOs met in Sundsvall, Sweden, at the Fourth International Private Sector Conference on Drugs in the Workplace and the Community. The participants agreed upon a series of action plans, the main feature of which is the development of networks and partnerships at the regional and local levels to kick-start preventive programmes in the workplace and the community.
