[ Drug and alcohol abuse prevention ]

At the request of the ILO and with UNDCP funding, a manual on drug and alcohol abuse prevention programmes in the maritime industry was prepared by the ILO departments SafeWork and Maritime in cooperation with the International Maritime Organization, the International Shipping Federation and the International Transport Workers' Federation. Intended for shipowners and managers, it focuses on how to establish and implement a prevention programme.

As part of the same project, the ILO provided assistance to the National Maritime Polytechnic in the Philippines, one of the world's major trainers of seafarers. The ILO and the Polytechnic developed a training package to integrate drug and alcohol prevention programmes into the training curricula of the country's maritime academies, in which all Filipino seafarers are trained.

The manual has recently been updated, using input from various maritime groups, companies and individual users.
