TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames. Powder, alcohol-resistant foam, water spray, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION     In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.

EXPOSURE   AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Abdominal pain. Cough. Nausea. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Vomiting. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes). Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Burning sensation. Pain. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Blurred vision. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Diarrhoea. (Further see Inhalation). Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Evacuate danger area! Consult an expert! Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in dry sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. T+ Symbol

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. TURNS TO PALE YELLOW ON EXPOSURE TO AIR.

Chemical dangers
The substance may polymerize under the influence of water, acid(s), base(s) or heat with fire or explosion hazard. The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides and cyanides. Reacts violently with alcohols amines and bases. Attacks many plastics, rubber, aluminium, copper and zinc.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: 0.005 ppm as TWA; 0.02 ppm as STEL; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); SEN (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: sensitization of respiratory tract (Sa); Carcinogen category: 3A; (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its vapour and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of vapour may cause asthma-like reactions. Inhalation of vapour may cause chemical bronchitis, pneumonitis and lung oedema. Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma. This substance is possibly carcinogenic to humans.

NOTES
Technical toluene diisocyanate is a mixture of 2,4- and 2,6-isomers (mostly 80:20).
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact with this substance.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
No odour warning if toxic concentrations are present.

Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
