TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Flammable. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO contact with hot surfaces. NO contact with oxidants. Dry powder, carbon dioxide, alcohol-resistant foam. NO water.
EXPLOSION Above 51°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed. Above 51°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment. In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.

EXPOSURE   AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat. Burning sensation. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes). Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Blisters. Pain. Skin burns. Protective clothing. Protective gloves. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Watering of the eyes. Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns. Safety goggles, face shield. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Burning sensation. Abdominal pain. Shock or collapse. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Ventilation. Remove all ignition sources. Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. UN Hazard Class: 6.1
UN Subsidiary Risks: 3
UN Pack Group: I

Do not transport with food and feedstuffs.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SAFE STORAGE
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61S2487 Fireproof. Keep in a well-ventilated room. Dry.

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes on heating producing hydrogen cyanide, nitrogen oxides. Reacts violently with water. Reacts with strong oxidants, strong acids, strong bases, alcohols, amines.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV not established.
MAK: sensitization of respiratory tract and skin (Sah); (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed.

Effects of short-term exposure
Causes watering of the eyes. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Boiling point: 158-168°C
Melting point: -30°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.095
Solubility in water: reaction
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: 0.2
Flash point: 51°C c.c.
Auto-ignition temperature: 300°C

NOTES
Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact.
The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See section Occupational Exposure Limits.
