ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames. NO contact with incompatible substances (see Chemical Dangers). NO contact with hot surfaces. Alcohol-resistant foam, powder, carbon dioxide, NO water.
EXPLOSION Above 72°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed. Above 72°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment. In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by spraying with water but avoid contact of the substance with water.
 
EXPOSURE   PREVENT GENERATION OF MISTS! STRICT HYGIENE! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Burning sensation. Cough. Shortness of breath. Sore throat. Laboured breathing. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes). Avoid inhalation of fine dust and mist. Closed system and ventilation. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention. See Notes.
Skin Redness. Skin burns. Burning sensation. Pain. Blisters. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention. Wear protective gloves when administering first aid.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Severe deep burns. Face shield or or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Burning sensation. Abdominal pain. Shock or collapse. (Further see Inhalation). Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Rest. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. Do NOT wash away into sewer. Chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. C Symbol

Physical dangers
The vapour is heavier than air.

Chemical dangers
On contact with hot surfaces or flames this substance decomposes forming highly toxic and corrosive gases (phosgene and hydrogen chloride). The substance decomposes rapidly on heating or on contact with alkalis, alcohols, amines and dimethyl sulphoxide - see ICSC0459, causing fire and explosion hazard. Reacts violently with strong oxidants. Reacts with water or steam producing heat, and corrosive fumes (hydrogen chloride - see ICSC0163). Attacks many metals forming flammable hydrogen gas (see ICSC0001), also on contact with metal salts.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: 0.5 ppm (Ceiling value); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: Carcinogen category: 3B; (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

Effects of short-term exposure
Tear drawing. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of the vapour or aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes).

NOTES
Reacts violently with fire extinguishing agents such as water.
The occupational exposure limit value should not be exceeded during any part of the working exposure.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
