TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames. Water spray, powder.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air. Risk of fire and explosion on contact with strong oxidants. Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting.

EXPOSURE   STRICT HYGIENE!
Inhalation Cough. Dizziness. Headache. Laboured breathing. (See Ingestion). Local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Refer for medical attention.
Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. First rinse with plenty of water, then remove contaminated clothes and rinse again. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Swelling of the eyelids. Blurred vision. Even permanent loss of vision. Safety spectacles face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Blue lips or fingernails. Blue skin. Convulsions. Drowsiness. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Vomiting. Weakness. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. Do NOT absorb in saw-dust or other combustible absorbents. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles. T+ Symbol

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SAFE STORAGE
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61S1673-S or 61GT2-III Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids, acid anhydrides food and feedstuffs. Keep in the dark. Well closed.

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
WHITE TO SLIGHTLY RED CRYSTALS, TURNS DARK ON EXPOSURE TO AIR.

Physical dangers
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic fumes (nitrogen oxides). The substance is a strong reducing agent and reacts violently with oxidants and strong bases.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: 0.1 ppm as TWA; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: (Inhalable fraction) 0.1 mg/m³; Peak limitation category: II(2); skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin (Sh); Carcinogen category: 3B; Pregnancy risk group: D; (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air will not or will only very slowly be reached on evaporation of this substance at 20°C; on spraying or dispersing, however, much faster.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes. Inhalation of dust may cause asthmatic reactions (see Notes). Swelling of mouth and throat may be observed following ingestion. The substance may cause effects on the blood, resulting in formation of methaemoglobin. Exposure may result in death.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Repeated or prolonged inhalation exposure may cause asthma. The substance may have effects on the kidneys, resulting in kidney impairment.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Boiling point: 267°C
Melting point: 139-147°C
Relative density (water = 1): 1.1
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 25°C: 4
Vapour pressure, Pa at 100°C: 144
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 3.7
Flash point: 156°C c.c.
Auto-ignition temperature: 400°C
Explosive limits, vol% in air: 1.5-?
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
The symptoms of asthma often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Anyone who has shown symptoms of asthma due to this substance should avoid all further contact with this substance.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
The relation between odour and the occupational exposure limit cannot be indicated.
Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water.
Benzofur D, Developer PF, Fourine D, Pelagon D, Orsin, Ursol-D and Vulkanox 4020 are trade names.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
