TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames. Water spray, foam, powder, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Finely dispersed particles form explosive mixtures in air. Prevent deposition of dust; closed system, dust explosion-proof electrical equipment and lighting. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water. Combat fire from a sheltered position.

EXPOSURE   PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Burning sensation. Headache. Blue lips or finger nails. Blue skin. Weakness. Dizziness. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Drowsiness. Local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! (Further see Inhalation). Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse and then wash skin with water and soap. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion (See Inhalation). Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Give a slurry of activated charcoal in water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Personal protection: complete protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. T+ Symbol

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SAFE STORAGE
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-61S3443-S Separated from strong oxidants, powdered metals, food and feedstuffs. Well closed.

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
WHITE TO PALE YELLOW CRYSTALS, WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

Physical dangers
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air.

Chemical dangers
May explode on heating even in the absence of air. Reacts violently with powdered metals and strong oxidants causing fire and explosion hazard. The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: 0.15 ppm as TWA; (skin); BEI issued; (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: skin absorption (H); Carcinogen category: 3B; (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation and through the skin and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the blood, resulting in the formation of methaemoglobin. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
The substance may have effects on the blood and liver, resulting in anaemia and liver impairment. The substance may have effects on the nervous system, and may cause impairment in visual acuity. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes toxicity to human reproduction or development.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Boiling point: about 300°C
Density: 1.6 g/cm³
Solubility in water: poor
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20°C: <0.1
Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20°C (air = 1): 1.01
Flash point: 150°C c.c.
Auto-ignition temperature: 470°C
Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 1.46-1.58
The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect.
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
See ICSC 0460: o-dinitrobenzene, 0691: m-dinitrobenzene, 0692: p-dinitrobenzene.
NFPA Code: H 3; F 1; R 4; for o-DNB.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response. October 2005: UN number updated.
