TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Combustible under specific conditions. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO open flames. Water spray, foam, carbon dioxide, dry sand, special powder.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE   PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! STRICT HYGIENE! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Abdominal cramps. Cough. Diarrhoea. Dizziness. Headache. Laboured breathing. Nausea. Sore throat. Vomiting. Hair loss. Local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain. Protective gloves. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Safety spectacles, face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal cramps. Vomiting. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. EU classification

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
HYGROSCOPIC SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS

Chemical dangers
On contact with hot surfaces or flames this substance decomposes forming toxic gases. The solution in water is a weak base. Reacts with strong acids causing toxic hazard.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: (as Se) 0.2 mg/m³ as TWA; (ACGIH 2005).
MAK: (Inhalable fraction) 0.05 mg/m³; Peak limitation category: II(4); Carcinogen category: 3B; Pregnancy risk group: C; (DFG 2006).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the liver, heart, nervous system and gastrointestinal tract. Medical observation is indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the central nervous system, bone and blood. See Notes.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Melting point (decomposes): 320°C
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 20°C: 85
The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms. Bioaccumulation of this chemical may occur along the food chain, for example in plants and in fish. It is strongly advised that this substance does not enter the environment.

NOTES
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Also consult ICSC 0072 (Selenium).
Card has been partly updated in October 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
Card has been partially updated in August 2007: see Storage, Occupational Exposure Limits, Environmental Data.
