ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible but enhances combustion of other substances. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire. NO contact with combustibles and reducing agents. NO powder. Water in large amounts.
EXPLOSION Risk of fire and explosion on contact with acid(s), combustible substances, reducing agents.   In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.
 
EXPOSURE   PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST!  
Inhalation Burning sensation. Sore throat. Wheezing. Laboured breathing. Shortness of breath. Local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Pain. Serious skin burns. Blisters. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Blurred vision. Severe deep burns. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Shock or collapse. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.

Personal protection: filter respirator for organic gases and vapours. Chemical protection suit. Use face shield. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into air tight, dry containers, then remove to safe place. O Symbol

WHITE SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR.

Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes rapidly on heating above 175°C and on contact with acids producing chlorine and oxygen and causing fire and explosion hazard. The substance is a strong oxidant and reacts violently with combustible and reducing materials. The solution in water is a medium strong base. Reacts violently with ammonia, amines nitrogen compounds and many other substances, causing explosion hazard. Attacks many metals forming flammable/explosive gas (hydrogen - see ICSC 0001). Attacks plastic.

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by ingestion and by inhalation.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Corrosive on ingestion. Inhalation of decomposition products of the substance may cause lung oedema (see Notes). The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Rinse contaminated clothes (fire hazard) with plenty of water.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
