TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.   In case of fire in the surroundings: all extinguishing agents allowed.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE   STRICT HYGIENE! AVOID EXPOSURE OF (PREGNANT) WOMEN! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Cough. Sore throat. Ventilation (not if powder). Local exhaust or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Safety spectacles, face shield, or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Diarrhoea. Nausea. Vomiting. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Induce vomiting (ONLY IN CONSCIOUS PERSONS!). Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Sweep spilled substance into containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. (Extra personal protection: P3 filter respirator for toxic particles). Chemical protection suit. EU classification

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
WHITE CRYSTALS OR GREY CRYSTALLINE POWDER.

Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes on heating producing mercury vapours and other toxic fumes.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV (as Hg): 0.1 mg/m³ (skin) (ACGIH 1998).
MAK: (Hg organic compounds) skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin (Sh); Carcinogen category: 3B (DFG 2006).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
Evaporation at 20°C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly.

Effects of short-term exposure
The aerosol irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. The substance may have effects on the kidneys, resulting in disfunction. Animal tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Melting point: 176-186°C
Solubility in water: poor
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water and soil. In the food chain important to humans, bioaccumulation takes place, specifically in fish and crustacea.

NOTES
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Phenalco, Phe-Mer-Nite, Mersolite, Phermernite are trade names.
Card has been partially updated in August 2007: see Occupational Exposure Limits.
