TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Flammable. Heating will cause rise in pressure with risk of bursting. NO open flames, NO sparks, and NO smoking. Powder, AFFF, foam, carbon dioxide.
EXPLOSION Above 54°C explosive vapour/air mixtures may be formed. Above 54°C use a closed system, ventilation, and explosion-proof electrical equipment. In case of fire: keep drums, etc., cool by spraying with water.

EXPOSURE
Inhalation Dizziness. Drowsiness. Dullness. Headache. Sore throat. Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing protection. Fresh air, rest. Refer for medical attention.
Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer for medical attention.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Face shield or eye protection in combination with breathing protection. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Nausea. Vomiting. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Do NOT induce vomiting. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Ventilation. Collect leaking and spilled liquid in sealable containers as far as possible. Absorb remaining liquid in sand or inert absorbent and remove to safe place. UN Hazard Class: 3
UN Pack Group: III

EMERGENCY RESPONSE SAFE STORAGE
Transport Emergency Card: TEC (R)-30GF1-III-9
NFPA Code: H2; F2; R1
Fireproof. Separated from strong oxidants, strong acids, peroxides, aluminum chloride. Store only if stabilized.

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
COLOURLESS LIQUID, WITH CHARACTERISTIC ODOUR.

Physical dangers
The vapours are uninhibited and may polymerize, causing blockage of vents.

Chemical dangers
The substance if not stabilized will polymerize with generation of heat. The substance decomposes on heating producing toxic gases and fumes. The substance is a strong reducing agent and reacts violently with oxidants. Reacts violently with aluminium salts.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: 50 ppm as TWA, 100 ppm as STEL; A4 (not classifiable as a human carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: 100 ppm, 490 mg/m³; Peak limitation category: I(2); (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation, through the skin and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful contamination of the air will be reached rather slowly on evaporation of this substance at 20°C.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance irritates the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the nervous system.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis. The substance may have effects on the liver, resulting in fatty degeneration.

NOTES
The information on this card applies to a mixture of m- and p-isomers.
Use of alcoholic beverages enhances the harmful effect.
An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert.
Card has been partly updated in October 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, Emergency Response.
