TYPES OF
HAZARD /
EXPOSURE
ACUTE HAZARDS / SYMPTOMS      PREVENTION      FIRST AID / FIRE FIGHTING
FIRE Not combustible. Gives off irritating or toxic fumes (or gases) in a fire.   In case of fire in the surroundings: use appropriate extinguishing media.
EXPLOSION

EXPOSURE   PREVENT DISPERSION OF DUST! AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A DOCTOR!
Inhalation Cough. Laboured breathing. Symptoms may be delayed (see Notes). Closed system and ventilation. Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position. Artificial respiration may be needed. Refer for medical attention.
Skin Redness. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse skin with plenty of water or shower.
Eyes Redness. Pain. Safety goggles or eye protection in combination with breathing protection if powder. First rinse with plenty of water for several minutes (remove contact lenses if easily possible), then take to a doctor.
Ingestion Abdominal pain. Burning sensation. Diarrhoea. Nausea. Vomiting. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Wash hands before eating. Rinse mouth. Give plenty of water to drink. Refer for medical attention.

SPILLAGE DISPOSAL PACKAGING & LABELLING
Personal protection: chemical protection suit including self-contained breathing apparatus. Do NOT let this chemical enter the environment. Sweep spilled substance into sealable containers; if appropriate, moisten first to prevent dusting. Carefully collect remainder, then remove to safe place. T+ Symbol

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance
ODOURLESS, COLOURLESS HYGROSCOPIC CRYSTALS.

Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes on heating producing very toxic fumes of cadmium and chlorine. Reacts with strong oxidants to produce toxic fumes of chlorine.

Occupational exposure limits
TLV: (as Cadmium) (Total dust) 0.01 mg/m³; (Respirable fraction) 0.002 mg/m³; as TWA; A2 (suspected human carcinogen); BEI issued; (ACGIH 2005).
MAK: skin absorption (H); Carcinogen category: 1; Germ cell mutagen group: 3A; (DFG 2004).

Routes of exposure
The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol and by ingestion.

Inhalation risk
A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when dispersed, especially if powdered.

Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is severely irritating to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. The substance is severely irritating to gastrointestinal tract. Inhalation of aerosol may cause lung oedema (see Notes). Exposure far above the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
The substance may have effects on the kidneys and lungs, resulting in kidney impairment and tissue lesions. This substance is carcinogenic to humans.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
Boiling point: 960°C
Melting point: 568°C
Density: 4.1 g/cm³
Solubility in water: good
The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms. Bioaccumulation of this chemical may occur in plants. It is strongly advised that this substance does not enter the environment.

NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort. Rest and medical observation is therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
Card has been partly updated in October 2005. See section EU classification.
