In addition to the World Health Report 2008, which was published recently, the WHO has just released a study on the global burden of disease which gives an overall idea of the state of health across the globe. The top ten causes of death are listed in the study along with estimates for over 130 reasons for disease and injury. Although many deaths, injuries and diseases are due to unhealthy and/or dangerous working conditions, it is important to realize that one is exposed to risk in all contexts of life. When setting a national occupational safety and health (OSH) policy, programme or system, it is essential to take into account the major health indicators prevalent in the country in question. This will improve the planning process and the setting of priorities. As such, interventions will be tailored to the real needs of the society at hand, making a strong association between health status inside and outside the workplace.
