Sergio Vieira de Mello was a dedicated international civil servant and a man who proved time and again that he could handle the toughest assignments. His tragic death today not only deprives the United Nations system of one of its leading lights -- it denies the Iraqi people the talents of a truly extraordinary individual who was fighting for their future. Everybody has to understand that the UN is not part of the problem. It is part of the solution. Sergio was a tireless advocate for peace and basic human rights for all. He will be deeply missed.
