The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a policy framework to promote the sound management of chemicals. It was adopted by the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) which took place in February 2006 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
SAICM supports the aim that chemicals should be produced and used in ways that reduce major unpleasant outcomes on the environment and human health. This was also the goal of the Summit on Sustainable Development which took place in Johannesburg in 2002. This target was then taken up by the SAICM preparatory committee.
There will be a second session of the ICCM in May 2009 to evaluate developments in the performance of SAICM. This meeting will take place on 11-15 May 2009 in Geneva.
More information on this meeting and other preparatory committee meetings can be found on www.saicm.org
