Prevention of Work-Related Road Traffic Accidents

Road accidents are the biggest cause of work-related accidental death. In France, road transport is responsible for 55% of fatal occupational accidents.

In an effort to control this major occupational hazard, the National Steering Committee for the Prevention of Occupational Road Transport Hazards has launched an awareness campaign entitled La route n’est pas un jeu (The road is not a game). The objectives are to inform enterprises of the dangers of road transport and to propose essential preventive measures. The campaign takes the form of posters and announcements in the specialist press and the promotion of a new Internet site on the prevention of occupational road transport hazards. Aimed principally at managers and professionals in large and small enterprises, the site provides a source of reference in which each area of prevention is illustrated by examples implemented in specific enterprises.

A dossier on the prevention of road traffic accidents is available from the French National Institute for Research and Safety INRS.

In Cameroon, under the patronage of the Prime Minister, the Association of Insurance Societies of Cameroon organized an International Forum on the Road from 20 to 23 June in Yaoundé. The main objective of the event was to develop, at the subregional level of the Economic Community of the Central African States, synergies between the public and private sectors and civil society aimed at stimulating investment and good practice in road safety, road maintenance and the effective implementation of the provisions defined in the CEMAC Community Code of the Road. Participants from six Central African countries participated in conferences, debates, exhibitions, workshops and round-table discussions on the protection of the road network and road safety in the region.
