Ratification of ILO Conventions

    On 24 July, Japan became the first country to ratify the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 2006 (No. 187). Since 1958, when Japan established its first national OSH plan, the country has been improving its OSH strategy systematically. The latest Five-Year-OSH Plan corresponds to the national OSH programme foreseen in ILO Convention No. 187 adopted by the International Labour Conference in June 2006. See the ILO Press Release for further information.

    Peru has become the 22nd country to ratify the Safety and Health in Mines Convention, 1995 (No. 176). Resolution No. 29012 was passed by the nation’s Congress, giving miners unprecedented rights in the country on safety and health matters. Ratification also is expected to bring new technology and techniques to one of the world’s largest mining countries.

    Other ratifications in 2006-2007 include:

    Occupational Safety and Health (Dock Work) Convention, 1979 (No. 152) ratified by the Republic of Moldova;

    Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981 (No.155) ratified by Algeria, Central African Republic, China, Montenegro, New Zealand and Sweden;

    Safety and Health in Construction Convention, 1988 (No. 167) ratified by Algeria and Brazil;

    Safety and Health in Mines Convention, 1995 (No. 176) ratified by Brazil;

    Safety and Health in Agriculture Convention, 2001 (No. 184) ratified by Argentina;
