ILO and NIOSH agree to cooperate on expanding safety and health at work

|
On 23 April 2008, the International Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment (SafeWork) of the International Labour Office (ILO) and the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) signed an agreement aimed at expanding safety and health in the workplace. Signed by Dr. Sameera Al-Tuwaijri and Dr. John Howard, respectively directors of ILO SafeWork and NIOSH, it agrees on "the critical importance of the world of work in defining sound occupational safety and health prevention policies and interventions in the workplace, and implementing strategies which expand protection to workers and their communities".

ILO OSH information resources and NIOSH
- NIOSH took part in the production of the 4th edition of the ILO Encyclopaedia of Occupational Safety and Health and has now reaffirmed its support for the preparation of the next edition, including for writing, editing, reviewing and updating articles, and suggesting new topics and approaches to information and dissemination.

- NIOSH is part of the international network of ILO/CIS Centres since 1960. It contributes to the processing and dissemination of information on occupational safety and health by sharing their publications with the CIS. The collected resources are then re-disseminated among this international network of 150 institutions worldwide and to the public via the Web.

- Under the umbrella of the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) (an WHO/ILO/UNEP programme), NIOSH is deeply involved in the drafting of the International Chemical Safety Cards and hosts them on its Web site. They are also a key partner in accessing international cooperation on chemical control banding.
