Injury prevention is an attitude which crosses workplace boundaries

The European Association for Injury Prevention Promotion has embarked on a coordinated APOLLO project entitled “Strategies and best practices for the reduction of injuries”. The APOLLO proposal aims to establish a practical approach for change in injury prevention.

It plans to develop tools to accomplish this change and to monitor its progress. The project has a wide scope and covers injuries across all walks of life, not just injuries at the workplace. It proposes to manage injury prevention both through legislation and at the operational level, in addition to engaging in the appropriate dissemination of good practices. Recently, APOLLO launched a “European Code Against Injuries” (ECAI).

This code contains clear-cut and attractive messages addressing everyone at the risk of accident due to any regular activity, whether on the road, exposed to fire hazards, near water, using dangerous products or exposed to any other occupational hazard. In this context health promotion has no boundaries and it has to target inherent attitudes towards prevention. On the assumption that life and health are inherently precious, it is hoped that behaviour will be in line with this attitude. Since work cannot be completely separated from other activities, cultivating carefulness and vigilance outside work will, we hope, result in better preventative behaviour at the workplace as well.
