Decent work = Safe work The ILO World of Work Magazine issued in August 2008 stresses the theme: Decent Work = Safe Work. This issue highlights the efforts and good practices taking place around the world to prevent and reverse the negative impact of unsafe and unhealthy work environments. The latest Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health ILO Convention, 2006 (No. 187) is repeatedly mentioned as a useful promotional tool for years to come. Nevertheless, there are a lot of challenges to resolve before the world can reach a state in which safe and healthy practices at work are a minimum requirement. Lenient enforcement, deficiencies in awareness and training, and a lack of wider partnerships are but some of the hindrances to achieving this goal. The ILO International Programme on Safety and Health at Work and the Environment (SafeWork) aims to respond to each of the difficulties facing the changing world today. In an article titled Promoting safe and healthy jobs, Dr Sameera Al-Tuwaijri, SafeWork Director, portrays the current trends in the area of occupational safety and health and explains the ILO tools which can support employers, workers and governments to achieve safe and healthy workplaces.
