A project entitled HIV/AIDS workplace policies and programmes in Peru was recently introduced by Carlos Ortiz Cornejo, Director General of the Instituto Andean Laboral (ILA) and Silvia Bustamante Grove, National Coordinator of the HIV/AIDS Programme of the International Labour Office (ILO). The project is part of an international effort aiming at the reduction of discrimination against infected and affected people and the prevention of HIV/AIDS in the workplace. Funded by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund, it will be managed by the ILO Subregional Office for the Andean countries for a 2-year duration. The objective is to strengthen the awareness, technical capacity and institutional capabilities of the government and the employers' and workers' organizations to initiate workplace action aiming at preventing the spread of HIV and reducing the impact of AIDS on social and economic development. The project will help the Peruvian ILO tripartite constituents to carry out comprehensive workplace policies and programmes for prevention, care and the protection of rights.
