Operating in Ontario since 1917, IAPA (Industrial Accident Prevention Association) marks 90 years of working to make workplaces safer and healthier. Anniversary celebrations are planned on July 17, the same day that IAPA was incorporated in 1917. IAPA is a not-for-profit, member driven organization, which is actively engaged in addressing the workplace health and safety needs of communities across Ontario, as well as representing Canada internationally on health and safety issues. While IAPA’s initial focus was on providing a workplace inspection force, the Association has evolved to be a source of training, consulting, educational services, and knowledge exchange, furthering its efforts to improve the quality of life in workplaces and communities, as well as prevent work-related injuries, illness, and fatalities. In 2003, IAPA became a CIS Collaborating Centre. IAPA organizes an annual Conference and Trade Show, Health & Safety Canada, the country’s largest and longest-running health and safety event. The next Conference, to be held in Toronto, 21-23 April 2008, will take as its theme the question, Are You Ready for the Future? and will highlight emerging issues such as pandemic planning, environmental/global warming, emergency preparedness, business continuity, nanotechnology and new and emerging hazards. IAPA offers a limited number of bursaries for individuals in transitional economies whose field of work or study is in workplace safety, health, or environment to give them the opportunity to attend the Conference.
