Natural disasters throw spotlight on safety of response measures

Emergency responders deserve adequate protection, while protecting the lives and assets of others. The recent hurricanes striking the Caribbean, the southern US, Mexico and Cuba; typhoons and heavy rain hitting Taiwan, then mainland China; wildfires multiplying in many US states and countries of Europe, threatening everyone in their paths. Those whose jobs are to protect others from such environmental hazards are particularly at risk. Below, CIS offers access to information resources on occupational safety and health (OSH) and disasters.

ILO resources:

  • The ILO Encyclopaedia on occupational health and safety which comprises a series of articles — Weather-Related Problems , Disasters and Major Accidents, Disaster Preparedness and Forest Fire Management and Control — providing general data on disasters and information on protective and preventive measures.

  • The International Hazard Datasheets on Fire-fighter summarizing safety and heatlh information.

    Non ILO resources:

  • Fact sheet on Worker Safety During Fire Cleanup prepared by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) covering the potential hazards arising after fires are extinguished.

  • Dangers associated with clean up and recovery from hurricanes
  • linking to numerous documents made available through the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) site.

The above is a non-exhaustive list of ILO and non ILO resources available on the web that addresses OSH issues associated to disasters.
