A report on temporary agency work from the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions finds that temporary agency workers are much more likely to be dissatisified with their jobs than permanent employees. This seems to be due more to the insecurity of their situation and to the fact that, for many of them, temporary agency work is not a first choice, rather than to poor working conditions at a day-to-day level. On the other hand, temporary agency workers also report less stress at work. The report outlines some of the trends in this sector and the main characteristics of temporary agency workers, including the reasons why people take up temporary agency work. The study then examines working conditions factors such as job autonomy, access to training and exposure to risk, before going on to highlight some examples of national action programmes to improve working conditions for these workers.
