The German institute for statutory accident insurance, Deutsche Gesetzliche Unfallversicherung (DGUV), has issued a press release to draw attention to the high rate of skin diseases among young workers and apprentices. A two-year skin campaign was launched by the German health and accident insurance institutions in January 2007 (see the CIS News item). The new press release highlights the problem among young hairdressers. The DGUV estimates that a quarter of the 9500 cases of occupational skin disease reported to the insurance institutes each year are in the under-25 age group. Hairdressers are the main sufferers, followed by health care workers, salespersons and food service personnel. Daily handling of cleaning agents, chemicals and water can damage the skin and lead to allergies and eczema. This problem may force many young workers to give up their chosen occupation, although with the correct preventive measures, skin diseases can be brought under control. Studio78, a training and advisory centre for hairdressers in Bochum, recommends the adoption of a skin protection plan, including the use of protective gloves and alternating between wet and dry work. Further information on the prevention campaign may be seen here. Further information on skin protection for hairdressers and the services offered by Studio78 may be seen here.
