CIS Annual Meeting

    The 2003 meeting of CIS National and Collaborating Centres took place on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 May, in London, United Kingdom, at the Imperial Hotel on Russell Square.

    The meeting of CIS Centres was preceded on Wednesday by workshops on "Creating the electronic OSH information and knowledge service" and "Creating the successful OSH publicity campaign involving inspectors". Thursday morning there were presentations on various aspects of the activities of UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) by Mr Peter Rimmer, Director of Information, and Liz Justice, Press Officer.

    The CIS Meeting itself, attended by more than 30 delegates, started after lunch on Thursday. The Director of the ILO's London Office, Mr Peter Brannen, greeted the delegates, after which the Head of CIS, Dr Emmert Clevenstine, provided an overview of CIS activities during the past year. This was followed by a discussion of CIS's Web strategy, in particular in connection with the recently-created portal for its National Centres. Starting on Thursday and continuing on Friday, many of the Centres represented at the meeting made a brief presentation on their activities. Dr Nabil Watfa, from the ILO Arab States Multidisciplinary Advisory Team, spoke about the occupational safety and health situation in the countries covered by his office.

    Continuing the Meeting, Mr Roger Bibbings, Occupational Safety Advisor for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and Sara Lumley, from NEBOSH - the National Examining Board for Occupational Safety and Health, elaborated on important recent developments in their respective organizations.

    The meeting continued by a general discussion of CIS's present and future roles, after which Dr Jukka Takala, Head of the ILO's SafeWork In-Focus Programme closed the meeting with an overview of the ILO's present tasks in the OSH area.
