World AIDS Day 2008 – Lead-Empower-Deliver

December 1st is the internationally recognised day for reminding the world of the constant struggle to prevent HIV/AIDS and to provide support for those living with the infection. This year specifically is the 20th anniversary of the first World AIDS Day. Since 1988, the meaning of and approaches to tackling HIV issues have changed. Building on last year’s leadership theme, it is time to empower and deliver. This year, the campaign will be manifested around the world and will include people from all walks of life who will join in marches, leadership debates, public awareness events and statements by decision makers.

It is time to act on promises and to feel empowered to do so. While the lead has been taken on HIV policies, are they implemented? While treatment of the disease has improved and become more widespread, does everyone have access to it? Why HIV-positive people are still stigmatized and discriminated against? This brings us to the role of the ILO in protecting the rights of workers to a decent job regardless of their HIV status.

The ILO is joining the global effort to achieve “the goal of universal access to comprehensive prevention programmes, treatment, care and support by 2010”. This should begin with individuals who must feel empowered to ask for their rights, to form communities with leadership qualities to then advocate governments to deliver. In this context, the world of work and as part of its occupational safety and health services plays an essential role in reaching workers and their families and providing access to awareness, prevention tools, treatment, and human rights.
