Analysis Summary
A. Review Issues and Questions
B. Review Comments The American Industrial Hygiene Association’s (AIHA) OHSMS was developed in response to the interest and success of ISO 9000 in the mid 1990’s. It is a guidance document meant to assist organizations achieve safe working conditions. It is stated in the document that: It may be used by practicing health and safety professionals in the United States and elsewhere as a basis for designing, implementing, and evaluating OHSMSs.... As an ISO 9000-based OHSMS, the AIHA document contains 20 primary sections that correspond with ISO 9000. At the time of its publication, it was widely discussed at American National Standards Institute (ANSI) deliberations that were held to formulate an American position on the development of an ISO OHSMS. Prominent in these discussions was the use of "shall" statements in this document. This OHSMS contains all 27 OHSMS variables used in this analysis. It is unknown at this time whether the AIHA will revise this OHSMS to be consistent with pending ISO 9000 revisions.
