Information and Knowledge Base

The 2003 International Labour Migration Survey indicated the high demand for ILO activities in improving the knowledge base on migration, including statistics on labour migration. This was confirmed by the 2004 International Labour Conference resolution.

The ILO develops an active policy-oriented research and information dissemination programme on labour migration through monographs, working papers and the present website. The main focused areas being progressively addressed are: globalization, migration and migrant protection, skilled labour migration, diaspora and their contributions, labour market discrimination against migrant workers, migration and development, irregular employment of migrant workers, migration legislation, migration and gender, among others.

In 2007, the ILO conducted in collaboration with the GIAN (Geneva International Academic Network) a research programme on skilled migration.

The ILO collects profiles of good practices on labour migration contained in the Multilateral Framework and good practices in the Anti-discrimination Action Profiles database.
